Historic Berlin record shop Hard Wax is moving to a new location within the Kraftwerk building, home to clubs Tresor and OHM. Posting via X (formerly Twitter) today, October 13th, the team confirmed the moving date as Monday, October 30th. The new site will sit between Tresor and OHM at the Köpenicker Strasse complex in Mitte. Hard Wax, which opened in 1989 on Reichenberger Strasse before moving to Paul-Lincke-Ufer in 1996, is leaving its current Kreuzberg premises due to redevelopment. A source close to the shop said the entire building, home to various creative businesses, is being turned into luxury flats. One of these businesses is Dubplates & Mastering (D&M), the legendary cutting house and audio mastering studio founded by Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald in 1995. (Ernestus also founded Hard Wax.) At the time of writing, it’s unclear if D&M has secured a new site. “Rebuilding this setup with all the acoustics and moving all of the equipment etc. will require a lot of work and a lot of money,” D&M’s mastering engineer Kassian Troyer told Resident Advisor in December. For Hard Wax, the past 27 years at Paul-Lincke-Ufer 44a have seen it become one of dance music’s most famous and beloved record shops. Numerous artists have worked behind the counter, including Marcel Dettmann, Cassy, DJ Pete and, more recently, Fadi Mohem.en gems.
